Putting a dash cam in a fleet vehicle is a different job from putting one in a car. A shop that installs a single-lens camera in a Camry is working on one vehicle, in a bay, with the customer waiting. A fleet dash cam installation in Maryland is a dual-facing AI camera tied to a gateway, on forty box trucks in a yard in Jessup, between the end of the morning dispatch and the start of the next one. The two of us came out of car-audio shops, so that is not a knock on anyone. The hardware, the placement, the power, and the verification are different, and the questions you ask before you book should be different too.
What the hardware actually is
The three platforms we install most weeks handle the camera differently.
- Samsara cameras (the CM33/CM34 dual-facing cameras, for example) do not stand alone. The camera cable runs to a vehicle gateway that plugs into the diagnostic port, so a Samsara camera install is really two devices and one cable run between them.
- Motive works the same way for the standard AI Dashcam: it connects to the Vehicle Gateway on the port, with the camera on the glass, the gateway under the dash, and a cable between them. The AI Dashcam Plus is the exception. It goes on the diagnostic port by itself, with no Vehicle Gateway.
- Netradyne Driveri is usually hardwired on its own: constant power, ignition, and ground. There is no gateway to lean on, so the power decisions land entirely on whoever does the wiring.
Where the camera goes on the glass
Federal rules for commercial vehicles are specific about windshield-mounted safety devices. Under 49 CFR 393.60(e), a device like a dash cam has to sit either within 8.5 inches of the top of the area swept by the wipers or within 7 inches of the bottom of it, and outside the driver's sightline to the road and to signs and signals. In practice that means high on the glass, near the mirror, inside the wiper sweep so rain and road salt get cleared off the lens.
A dual-facing camera also has to see the driver, and that is where the right spot changes vehicle to vehicle. In a Freightliner Cascadia the mirror mount and the sun visor travel leave a narrow band where the camera clears both. In a Ford Transit the glass is more upright and the visor swings closer to the mount. On a bus with a tall windshield the camera can end up too high to frame the driver at all if you go by habit. Both lenses get aimed and checked on the live feed: road-facing level with the horizon, driver-facing framed on the seat rather than the headliner. Then the camera is calibrated in the platform, because the AI features assume the lens is where the calibration says it is.
Power and routing
The most consequential decision in any 12-volt install is where the power comes from, and cameras raise the stakes because most fleets want parking-mode recording. That needs constant power. A camera wired to a switched circuit stops recording when the key comes out, which is exactly when the backing accident in the yard happens. We meter the circuit before we take power from it, fuse it, and tie ground to bare metal with a ring terminal.
The cable run is the part nobody sees and the part that fails first. From the glass it runs along the headliner, down the A-pillar, and into the dash. Most modern vans and trucks have a curtain airbag behind that A-pillar trim, so the cable has to be routed where it cannot end up in the deployment path. The trim clips on a Transit A-pillar break if you pry them wrong, and a broken clip is a rattle the driver hears every day. Strain relief at the camera and at the gateway keeps vibration from backing the connectors out. Electrical tape and quick-splice taps do not survive a work truck, so the splices are crimped, or soldered with heat shrink.
Verification before the vehicle goes back to work
Before the vehicle leaves our hands we confirm in the platform that the gateway is online, that both lenses show a clean live image, that a test event actually uploads, and that the vehicle is named and assigned correctly instead of sitting in the dashboard as an unassigned serial number. A lit LED on the camera tells you none of that. On Samsara the check runs in the Samsara Fleet app's install flow while we are still in the cab, on Netradyne it runs in the Driveri Installer app, and on Motive it is the fleet dashboard. A vehicle that will not verify stays on the open list until it does.
What to ask before you book an installer
- Do you install on-site at our yard, or do our trucks come to you? For five vehicles a shop visit might work. For fifty it is a week of lost trucks.
- Which platforms do you put in every week? The answer should be specific. Ours is Motive, Netradyne, and Samsara, day in and day out.
- Where do you take camera power from, and do you meter it first?
- How do you handle the A-pillar on a vehicle with curtain airbags?
- How do you verify each vehicle, and can our dispatcher watch it come online in the dashboard before you leave?
- Are you insured, and can you send a Certificate of Insurance? Ours is available on request.
- What is the plan for sixty vehicles across three yards? The right answer involves batches sequenced around your dispatch schedule and shipping coordinated with the vendor so the boxes land the week the installs are scheduled.
One thing about audio
Maryland is an all-party consent state for audio recording, and so is Pennsylvania. If your driver-facing camera records cab audio, the driver acknowledgment paperwork is part of the rollout, not an afterthought. That is a policy question rather than a wiring question, but it comes up early in most rollouts.
